A brief history:
Corning Glass Works produced the first light bulb for Thomas Edison in 1879.
They developed this heat resistant borosilicate glass, to withstand extremely high or low temperatures, for use in rail road signal lanterns for the American Railway Company in 1912. As an experiment, Corning research physician James Littleton asked his wife to bake a cake in an adapted base of a glass lamp. She did. The glass withstood the heat of the oven and the cake was perfectly cooked. The first bakeware item made of glass was born. Pyrex launched its first product in 1915, a pie dish which sold for $0.69.
James A Jobling acquired the rights, from Corning, to produce Pyrex in Sunderland in 1922. His initials stamp JAJ along with the Crown symbol means that the Pyrex that was made in England. It is also sometimes referred to as “Crown” Pyrex.
After 85 years, the production of Pyrex at the Sunderland plant ended in September 2007. ARC International, who owned the plant, decided to move production to France.
Today Arc International licenses the Pyrex brand of cookware for sale in the European Union.
